Ah, the dog days of summer… If you’re like me, you’ll want to do nothing more than to lounge in some shady spot with friends while someone feeds you watermelon and barbecue. Unfortunately, life is not like that… But this heat and humidity has still melted you into a puddle and you desperately need an ice cold drink that is not that can of beer in your fridge. Now what? This. Watermelon. Punch. That’s what. Punches are great because they are simple to put together and easy to mass produce. You literally dump everything in an icy jug, give it a good stir and voila – boozy refreshments for everyone! Minimal effort, maximum return.
Punches might conjure memories of overly sweet artificial fruit drinks, but it doesn’t have to be that way!!! I try to keep the sugar to a minimal by using sparkling water and fresh juices, rather than sodas and fruit cocktails. And I also like to make punches a little more sophisticated by actually using interesting flavour profiles. The watermelon in the fridge and the rosemary from my mom’s bountiful balcony herb garden seemed like the perfect contenders for a non-boring summer drink.
